The San Francisco 49ers are facing a major setback ahead of their season opener against the Rams after Christian McCaffrey suffered a hamstring injury in Friday's practice that is expected to sideline him for two to three months.
McCaffrey was injured during practice and subsequently left the field. The 49ers are expected to monitor the injury closely as the star running back begins his rehabilitation.
The timing is particularly significant for San Francisco, which has built much of its offensive identity around McCaffrey's ability to create plays both on the ground and through the air. Since joining the 49ers, McCaffrey has become a central piece of Kyle Shanahan's offense and one of the league's most productive all-purpose backs.

What It Costs The Offense
With McCaffrey unavailable, San Francisco will have to rely on its other running backs to absorb his workload. The team could also explore additional depth at the position depending on how McCaffrey's recovery progresses.
For now, the focus will be on getting McCaffrey healthy. A recovery lasting two to three months would keep him out for a substantial portion of the opening stretch of the season and could force the 49ers to adjust their offensive plans.
Matt Maiocco has covered the San Francisco 49ers for eighteen seasons.
