SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers placed running back Isaac Guerendo on the reserve/physically unable to perform list Sunday, meaning he will miss at least the first four games of the regular season.
Guerendo has been dealing with an injury that kept him from returning to the field in time for the league's roster deadline. By placing him on reserve/PUP, the 49ers can retain the running back while opening a spot on their 53-man roster.
The move comes at a difficult time for San Francisco's backfield. The 49ers are already facing uncertainty surrounding Christian McCaffrey's availability, leaving the team with significantly less depth at the position entering the season.
Guerendo showed flashes of big-play ability during his opportunities with San Francisco and was viewed as an important piece of the team's running back depth. His absence will place additional pressure on the remaining backs to take on larger roles early in the season.
The earliest Guerendo can return is after San Francisco's first four games. The 49ers will now have to navigate the opening portion of the schedule without one of their key depth pieces at running back.
San Francisco is scheduled to open the season against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne before facing the Miami Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks.
